The idea of coaching is more about topic-dealing than it is about problem-solving. The definition of coaching provided by Google is as follows: “Providing training, feedback, and direction to guarantee effective performance.” To me, coaching is a method of providing assistance to another individual, or rather, provoking their thought patterns so that they may discover themselves in a way they never thought to be possible. Do you remember the last time a close friend or family member confided in you about their problems? Are you able to recall the exact sequence of events that occurred after that? Were you able to assist them? Did you pay attention to them, or did they pay attention to you?
The goal of a coach is to assist the speaker in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the challenge that they are currently experiencing. According to the book “Adult Learning,” written by renowned writers Kolb, Honey, Mumford, and Peter Senge, there are four distinct kinds of learning styles that we all have, and each of us has a primary learning style that we like to use. Once we have determined the type of learner that our speaker is, we are able to help anybody comprehend anything. At least a cognizant ability to listen is required for anybody who is effective at persuading other people. People that fall within this category are able to perceive how others react to them and alter their actions accordingly.
